Garage Door Repair in Calaveras, San Joaquin and Amador Counties
When your garage door breaks, you want it fixed right, by someone who knows doors. Afford-A-Door Inc. repairs garage doors across Calaveras, San Joaquin and Amador Counties, from broken springs and snapped cables to doors that have come off their tracks. We’re an owner-run garage door repair service based in Valley Springs.
John, the owner, has spent 39 years in the trade and does the repair himself. He’ll find what’s actually wrong, tell you what it’ll take to fix it, and give you a quote before any work starts. Call him at (209) 327-8585.
Signs Your Garage Door Needs Repair
A loud bang, then the door won't lift
Usually a broken spring.
The door hangs crooked or closes unevenly
Often a snapped or frayed cable.
The door has come off its track
Or the rollers have popped out.
Grinding, squeaking or shaking
Worn rollers or hinges.
A dented or cracked panel
After a bump from a car or a ball.
The opener runs, but the door doesn't move
A broken spring or an opener fault.
See one of these? Stop using the door and call John at (209) 327-8585.
Garage Door Repairs We Handle
Broken Spring Repair
The springs do the heavy lifting. When one snaps, the door suddenly feels like it weighs a few hundred pounds and the opener can’t lift it. We repair torsion and extension springs, fit new springs matched to your door’s weight, check the cables, and balance the door so it runs smoothly again.
Cable Repair and Replacement
Frayed or snapped lift cables are the usual reason a door hangs crooked or drops on one side. We replace the cables, check the drums and springs they work with, and get the door closing level again.
Door Off Its Track
A door can come off its track after a bump, a broken cable or worn rollers. Stop using it, because forcing it can bend the track or drop the door. We put it back on track, straighten or replace damaged track, and replace any worn rollers.
Bent or Misaligned Tracks
Bent, loose or misaligned tracks make a door bind, scrape or stop partway. We realign and tighten the tracks and replace sections that are too damaged to straighten.
Worn Rollers and Hinges
Worn rollers and cracked hinges make a door loud and shaky, and over time they wear out other parts. We replace them with quality parts so the door runs quieter and smoother.
Dented or Cracked Panels
A dented or cracked panel can affect how the whole door moves. If a matching panel is still available for your door, we replace just that section. If it isn’t, John will tell you your options.
Openers That Won't Cooperate
An opener that hums without lifting, reverses for no reason or ignores the remote usually needs a fix, not a new door. We work on Genie and other major brands, and install LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers when a replacement makes more sense.
Commercial Doors
We also work on commercial sectional and roll-up doors, and the motors that run them.
Need a tune-up or a new weather seal instead? See Parts and Maintenance.
Door Stuck or Broken? What to Do Until John Arrives
- Don’t force the door or keep pressing the opener. You can bend the track or burn out the motor.
- Don’t touch the springs or cables. They’re under a lot of tension and can cause serious injury.
- Don’t pull the red emergency release if the door is open or a spring is broken, because the door can drop.
- Keep people, pets and cars clear of the door.
- Call John at (209) 327-8585. He books repairs by appointment, so the sooner you call, the sooner you’re on his schedule.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Garage Door?
Repair usually makes sense when…
- the door itself is solid, and the problem is one part (a spring, cable, roller, hinge or the opener)
- the panels are in good shape
- you’re happy with how the door looks and works
Replacement is worth a look when…
- several panels are damaged or rusted through
- the door keeps breaking, one part after another
- parts for your door are no longer available
- you want an insulated door or a new look
If a repair makes more sense, John will tell you. If it’s time for a new door, see Garage Door Installation.

You'll often hear a loud bang from the garage. After that the door feels very heavy, rises a few inches and stops, or the opener strains and can't lift it. On a torsion spring, you may see a gap in the coil above the door.
We don't recommend it. Garage door springs hold a lot of tension, and winding or releasing them without the right tools and training can cause serious injury. Call a professional.
Most springs are rated for around 10,000 open-and-close cycles. For a household that uses the door a few times a day, that's roughly six or seven years.
It depends on the repair and today's material prices, which keep changing. John looks at your door and gives you a quote before any work starts.
