Garage Door Sensor Repair and Safety Checks in Calaveras, San Joaquin and Amador Counties
A garage door is the biggest moving object in most homes, and its safety system is what stops it from closing on a person, a pet or a car. When the sensors act up, or the door won’t reverse the way it should, it needs looking at. Afford-A-Door Inc. repairs garage door sensors and checks safety systems for homes across Calaveras, San Joaquin and Amador Counties, from our base in Valley Springs.
John has 39 years in the trade. He’ll find out why your door is misbehaving, fix it, and test every safety feature before he leaves. You get a quote before any work starts. Call him at (209) 327-8585.
Signs Your Garage Door's Safety System Needs Attention
The door reverses for no reason
It starts down, then goes back up as it closes.
It won't close, and the opener lights blink
The opener thinks the sensors are blocked.
A sensor light is off or flickering
The sensors may need realigning or replacing.
The door doesn't reverse when it touches something
That's the dangerous one: stop using the door.
Your opener has no safety sensors at all
That usually means it's decades old.
A remote went missing
Or you've moved in and don't know who has the codes.
See one of these? Call John at (209) 327-8585 and tell him what the door is doing.
Safety and Security Services
Safety Sensor Repair and Alignment
The photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the track stop the door if something crosses its path. We clean, realign and replace sensors, and fix wiring, so the door closes when it should and stops when it must.
Auto-Reverse Testing and Adjustment
Every opener should reverse if the door touches something on the way down. We test it and adjust the force and travel settings so it reacts properly.
Garage Door Safety Inspection
A full check of the sensors, auto-reverse, springs, cables and emergency release, with a straight report on anything that needs attention.
Replacing Openers Without Modern Safety Features
Openers made since the early 1990s have to include entrapment protection like photo-eye sensors. If yours doesn’t, it’s time for a new one. We install LiftMaster and Chamberlain.
Keypad and Remote Security
Lost a remote, or just moved in? We reprogram your opener so old remotes stop working, set a new keypad code, and add new remotes. Rolling-code openers change the code every time you press the button, so it can’t be copied.
Battery Backup
California requires battery backup on newly installed openers, so you can still get in and out during a power outage.
Door itself broken, off track or dented? See Garage Door Repair.
Test Your Auto-Reverse Once a Month
Lay a roll of paper towels flat where the door closes and press the button. The door should reverse as soon as it touches the roll. If it doesn’t, stop using the door and call John at (209) 327-8585.
Simple Ways to Keep Your Garage Secure
- Keep the remote out of sight in your car, and take it with you if the car is parked outside.
- Change your keypad code if you’ve shared it, and every so often anyway.
- Lock the door from the garage into the house.
- Don’t leave the garage door partly open.
- Know how your emergency release works, and ask John about protecting it from being tripped from outside.

Garage Door Safety FAQs
Usually the safety sensors: they're dirty, knocked out of line, or something is blocking the beam. It can also be the force setting on the opener. Clean the sensor lenses and make sure nothing's in the way. If it keeps happening, call John.
That usually means the opener thinks the sensors are blocked or misaligned. Check both sensor lights. If one is off or flickering, the sensors need realigning or replacing.
Make sure both lenses are clean and pointing straight at each other at the same height. Most sensors have a light that goes solid when they're lined up. If you can't get a solid light, or the brackets are bent, we can realign or replace them.
Once a month. Use the paper-towel test above. If the door doesn't reverse, stop using it and call us.
No. Openers made since the early 1990s are required to have entrapment protection like photo-eye sensors. If yours doesn't, we recommend replacing it.
Yes. We clear the old remotes from your opener, program new ones, and set a fresh keypad code.
It depends on whether the sensors need realigning, rewiring or replacing. John gives you a quote before any work starts.
