Garage Door Spring Repair and Replacement in Calaveras, San Joaquin and Amador Counties
A loud bang from the garage, and now the door won’t open? That’s usually a broken spring. The springs carry the weight of the door, so when one snaps, the door feels like it weighs a few hundred pounds and the opener can’t lift it.
Afford-A-Door Inc. repairs and replaces torsion and extension springs for homes across Calaveras, San Joaquin and Amador Counties, from our base in Valley Springs. John has 39 years in the trade. He fits springs matched to your door, checks the cables, and balances the door before he leaves. You get a quote before any work starts.

Signs of a Broken Garage Door Spring
A loud bang from the garage
Springs often break with a sound like a gunshot.
The door won't lift, or only a few inches
The opener strains, hums or stops.
A gap in the spring above the door
A broken torsion spring shows a clear split in the coil.
The door feels very heavy
With the spring gone, the opener and hardware take the full weight.
The door goes up crooked
One side lifts before the other, or the door drops fast.
Loose or hanging cables
A cable can come off its drum when a spring lets go.
See one of these? Leave the door closed and call John at (209) 327-8585.
Torsion Springs and Extension Springs
Torsion Springs
Mounted on a bar above the door. They wind up as the door closes and unwind to help lift it. Most newer doors use them.
Extension Springs
Run along the tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. Common on older and lighter doors. They should always have safety cables through them.
Cables, Drums and Hardware
The springs work with the lift cables, drums and bearings. A spring repair isn’t finished until those are checked too.
Not sure which kind you have? Take a photo of the springs above or beside your door, and John can tell you on the phone.
Garage Door Spring Repair and Replacement
Broken Spring Replacement
We remove the broken spring and fit a new one sized to your door’s weight and height, so the door lifts the way it was designed to.
Replacing Both Springs
Most doors with two springs had them installed at the same time, so when one breaks the other usually isn’t far behind. John will tell you whether replacing both makes sense on your door.
Extension Spring Repair
We replace stretched or broken extension springs and the safety cables that keep a spring from flying loose if it breaks.
Cable and Drum Check
A spring break often damages the lift cables. We check and replace frayed cables and make sure they sit right on the drums.
Door Balance and Safety Test
After the new springs go in, we balance the door so it stays put halfway up, then test the opener’s force settings and auto-reverse.
Worn or Rusty Springs
Springs that squeak, look rusty or make the door hard to lift can be checked and lubricated before they fail.

Spring Snapped? Don't Use the Door
Leave the door closed and don’t run the opener. With a broken spring, the opener and the door’s own hardware take the full weight of the door, which can burn out the motor or let the door drop. Don’t pull the emergency release while the door is open, and never try to unwind or adjust a spring yourself: they hold a lot of tension. Call John at (209) 327-8585 and he’ll give you the first time he has open.

Garage Door Spring FAQs
The usual signs are a loud bang from the garage, a door that won't lift or only lifts a few inches, a visible gap in the spring above the door, or a door that feels very heavy. If you see any of these, leave the door closed and call us.
It's best not to. With a broken spring, the opener and the door's hardware take the full weight of the door, which can burn out the opener motor or let the door drop. Leave it closed and call a garage door company.
We don't recommend it. Garage door springs hold a lot of tension, and winding or releasing them without the right tools and training can cause serious injury.
Most standard springs are rated for around 10,000 open-and-close cycles. For a household that uses the door a few times a day, that's roughly six or seven years.
On a door with two springs, they usually went in together and have done the same number of cycles, so the second one often fails soon after the first. John will tell you whether replacing both makes sense for your door.
It depends on the springs your door needs and today's material prices, which keep changing. John looks at the door and gives you a quote before any work starts.
John books spring repairs by appointment. Call him at (209) 327-8585 and he'll give you the first time he has open. Until then, leave the door closed and don't use the opener.
